KHULA is Tangle’s dialogue driven, racial inclusivity project. It is open primarily to individual staff and Trustees working in arts and cultural organisations across South West England and the Thames Valley, but if you’re based outside of these areas, you can still get involved.

Through conversation and collaborative working and rooted in Tangle’s working practice of ‘Ubuntu’, KHULA creates safe spaces for open discussion around racial equity and representation.

Looking Beyond ‘EDI’

KHULA goes beyond the standard, off-the-shelf EDI programme. Taken from an isiZulu word meaning ‘to grow’, KHULA is genuinely collaborative. It sets out clear pathways to new ways of working. Rather than bringing a set course-like agenda, KHULA is centred on the specific needs of the individuals involved. Outcomes are designed together and not predetermined. Participants take ownership of the actions they will take to progress their understanding of racial equity.

“By engaging with KHULA we are able to raise visibility in our workforce by providing new role models, work closely with Tangle over a sustained period of time, grow our inclusivity ambitions and plan further work in the long term.”
Mayflower Studios, Southampton

Since KHULA launched in 2021, over 100 staff at arts organisations have taken part. In every case, racial awareness and understanding has changed for the better.

“KHULA offered us the flexibility that we need as an organisation and a process to forge a genuine partnership with mutual benefit. Working with Tangle helped us to offer impactful opportunities to engage with new and existing audiences for long term benefit.” Pegasus Theatre, Oxford

KHULA is led by Tangle Associate Artist Sibusiso Mamba, an actor, writer, director, and creative producer whose work spans Southern Africa, the UK, and the U.S. Sibusiso’s approach is human focused, giving room to ask difficult or uncomfortable questions without judgement.
